How Heritage and Tourism Drive South African Design Innovation

Bringing African Heritage to Life Through Handmade Design

South African Heritage is at the heart of what we celebrate here at Mash.T Design Studio, especially during Heritage and Tourism Month. For us, heritage and tourism are deeply intertwined. South Africa’s cultural diversity is a significant contributor to the tourism industry, drawing visitors from across the globe who are eager to learn, experience, and engage with our stories, traditions, and art. As artisans, creators, and custodians of African-inspired design, we see our work as a bridge between our heritage and the rest of the world, offering people a unique opportunity to engage with who we are in tactile and visual ways.

One example of this is the Zulu tradition of Imandulo, a practice that begins in September, marking the start of spring. Imandulo holds great cultural importance for the Zulu people, symbolizing renewal and the rebirth of the land after the long winter months. Traditionally, this time of year is spent in rituals and ceremonies to honour the ancestors, ask for their blessings, and prepare for the planting season. This practice reflects the deep respect for nature and the spiritual ties that bind the Zulu people to their land and ancestors.

Bringing African Heritage to Life Through Handmade Design

At Mash.T, we see design as a powerful way to introduce elements of our heritage, such as Imandulo, to visitors and the wider world. Through the creation of our handmade, African-inspired furniture and lighting, we aim to make heritage tangible—something that people can touch, feel, and take into their homes. Our designs carry stories, symbols, and values that reflect who we are as Africans and South Africans, creating an opportunity for visitors to engage with our culture on a deeper, more meaningful level.

By incorporating traditional elements into modern design, we allow people to explore aspects of our heritage in ways that feel authentic and approachable. Whether through our use of locally sourced materials, our craftsmanship, or the cultural stories behind each piece, we invite people to learn about our history and identity in a way that resonates beyond words.
